It's the direction that people who can't animate want to go in.
I'm hoping Newgrounds will never take that path. It's already pathetic enough that there are nearly entirely video submissions out there getting daily awards, some getting Daily Feature, Weekly First, and Review Crew Pick. I'm speaking of course, with that last comment, about "My New Grounds".
This is probably the most vastly overrated submission I've seen in my entire three years on Newgrounds. I mean, wow. That would've taken half an hour to create. And it's higher rated than Adam Philip's masterpieces?
If video comes on here it will dominate solely because it's easy to produce and people don't think, "Well, geez, the flash takes way more effort and time."
Nah, they'll just go, "LOL OMG!" and vote five.
Animation will quickly disappear. And you'll have another YouTube.
Hot girls will submit videos of themselves in tight little tshirts and underwear dancing around.
They'll become the most popular submissions on NG.
People will being submitting video of themselves simply talking to their webcam about something they don't like.
Kids will record themselves dancing or playing their favorite video game or both, without a trace of humor in it, and win Daily Second.
And as several little kids here pointed out, "I like video submissions because they I can submit to the portal".
Well, there goes talent. Any kid with a webcam can submit something and not get blammed.
Were it put to a vote, people would obviously be in favor of video because they can do it, it's easy, and they haven't thought of the consequences.
Tom was talking about not wanting animators to leave, but I can guarantee you quite a few would.
So many guys now are getting sick of hentai, sprites, and video submissions swarming all the flash sites.
I've talked to quite a few immensely talented animators who have their own sites and only stick their stuff there. Many of them once upon a time submitted their earlier not as good movies. I ask them why they don't submit to Newgrounds still or at all.
They'll usually reply, "Because Newgrounds has become like all the other sites. Quality means NOTHING. Unoriginality and lack of effort are applauded, while the good stuff is ignored."
It's very true these days.
You're taking it way too far to the extreme here. If NG had a video section, I hope the voters would be smart enough to blam anything that isn't entertainment related. IE cam girls, blogging, random shit, etc. I could see it not working out- but as I mentioned, having the system the way it is now (embedding video in flash) stops anyone with just a webcam from submitting their stuff. Webcams are cheap, windows movie maker is free, but flash is not.
As for your immensely talented animators, well, they're going to have to suck it up. Newgrounds is the one giving them any exposure in the first place, so if they want to run back and horde their creations on their site that no one visits then power to them. But it's something you have to come to grips with. People like pop culture, video games, etc. and they will continue to do so. It's pervasive subject matter, you see it everywhere. Newgrounds is a flash site, but it's also about entertainment. Everything by Everyone? Yet it's not as if good animations don't find their place here anymore. Adam Phillips continues to dominate the top 50, and I regularly see excellent animations on the front page.
Take something like Super Mario Bros Z. Dear god, a sprite movie. I think it's well made though, and you can't deny the effort put into it. But since it's not a pure cartoon animated frame by frame at a blistering 45fps like waterlollies, then it doesn't deserve to be in the top 50 right!!!?
If Newgrounds only featured lavishly animated flash cartoons, there wouldn't be much content here. I hardly do animations, because I'm not that good at it. I prefer games, because I'm more adept at programming. And if you ask me, programming and animating (at high levels) require similar amounts of skill and dedication. I've had my games beat out by stuff that I didn't think was as deserving, but oh well. Newgrounds doesn't owe me anything, and I'm going to continue to do what I do.
Maybe your select group of animators need to step down from their pedestals and realize things aren't always going to be fair.

I can't say I'm a fan of video submissions. I'd go to YouTube if I wanted those. If worst comes to worst, we could have a video section, but I hope it doesn't come to that. Video sites bring out the worst in internet fads and shitty talent.

Masquatto, Chromeshark, and Vengeance kind of sum it up for me. I realize Flash live video is hard to make but still it is infinitly easier to do then flash. While some of the flash out there might be crappy animation wise it still takes an hour to do what a video does in a minute. I don't mind some live Flash (Like Claymation) and there are already a few Live action videos on Newgrounds that have set the precedent that mostly live action videos can be submitted, but the fact remains; Live Action is alot easier then Flash Animation. It's unfair to many authours that a website dedicated to their hard creations that consume YEARS of effort are judged and rated alongside something that can be done thoroughly within a week by those with Webcam or Video Camera.
There are already countless other websites that incorporate Video and Flash or just video. Newgrounds is still one of the only 'pure' Flash sites around. I see this often when you stumble upon a Flash Cartoon on say Ebaums world or Youtube labelled as 'New' when it's been on Newgrounds for months. Damn near everything Flash originates from here. The point of this rant is that there are enough sites out there for those who want to submit Live Action videos. Newgrounds doesn't need to be sullied with an influx of virals.
If people plan on using Live Action in their Flashes try to go about it like the Tomorrow's Nobodies Crew. They have the right idea.

Regardless it's apparent that people can submit Live Action and more then likely will do so in the future. So nothing I rant about can necessarily change that!
Like I said though, there is enough outlets on the internet for those kind of videos, and to have them start being posted on Newgrounds to be judged along side such great Flash films and artists like Dave of RAB fame, EricSullivan of Sunday School fame, or Adam Phillips of Brackenwood fame is horribly unfair.
Afro-Ninja, I know you are a Flash artist and realize the amount of work that go into Flash's better then most. And I know it sounds like my rant is against your 2nd place but it's not since you have already taken your licks. There's already enough people trying to flood the Portal with viral, 2 hour creation flash's. I can only imagine the chaos that would ensue if Newgrounds began incorporating Live Action on a mass scale, not to mention the eventual obscurity it'd probably fall into.

If it's a good video, than I think it's fine for Newgrounds, in my opinion. Useless video blogs and nonsense like that really doesn't belong here, but vids and the like that are actually worth a laugh should be more than welcome.

Video's still a relatively unexplored medium on newgrounds. I have in my time seen videos which would have been more accustomed to youtube in the portal (two fat children miming to Linken Park), but then stuff like My Newgrounds are just plain entertaining. I want video submissions to remain as an enigmatic and refreshing medium, but I don't think they will. In that case, newgrounds will have to cater to them.
I don't think anything on NG has produced this much controversy since the Tom Fulp 'Teletubbies" incident. However, that was more public. The point is, if it's bad, I blam the crap out of it! If it's good, I protect it like an endangered species. And that's that. I don't see any problem with video on newgrounds; as Tom said, NG once had a video section (I visited the site way before I had an account). Plus, not everyone can embed a video, like you mentoned. I also don't see any problem with artists expressing themselves in other ways. I have my own definitions of what isn't worthy of this site, and what is. Sure, no one cares and that's my point! Lot's of people in the comments for this post either accept video, or think NG will become the next Youtube. I don't think for a million years that the NG citizens would allow that to happen (thank you Blam and Protect!), so in the end, I like your videos (The Knee FTW) and as long as NG citizens are careful as to what comes on this site, we'll be fine.
Yeah, there should a be a video/flash portal, with the video being able to be reported if it breaks the rules ( like people get mass voting to get their v-blogs in)
Meh, I've seen so many videos on youtube and other sites, that I just don't see a purpose of adding a video portal. Your video wasn't bad, I 2'd it none the less. Just as I 0 "My New Grounds" now. It's not against your video, I just don't watch videos on Newgrounds, to see videos of real people. I watch it for corny little bits of cartoons. It's like Cartoon Network. It has "Cartoon" in it's name, yet they're trying to make shows with real people in it? It doesn't make sense.
Saying that though, it would be nice if I could contribute to Newgrounds. You see, I'm not artistic with a brush, pencil or anything like that. But I could do a lot more with a camera, as could a lot of people. It would make people that aren't as talented with flash, to feel as if they too could somehow contribute to the community.
I guess I'm a bit on both sides of the "issue". All in all, none of us have a say in this, admins do, and even if they decided to okay a video portal, it'd be months/years before we'd see it. As is the way of NG Chat and the Redesign.

i dont think video submissions should be removed for say but they should be submitted in small quaninties, like the"numa-numa" for example though not a flash forsay but it has brought newgrounds alot of attention.

I think video submissions do belong here on Newgrounds. If your motto is "Everything, By Everyone" you shouldn't restrict the medium. I also don't think Newgrounds would explode from spam. Videos that are crap will be blamed, users are only allowed to submit 2 submissions a day, and pornographic material is flagged, with these two restrictions I don't see Newgrounds being covered in anymore spam.

It is a tricky subject because if video is allowed where do you draw the line. I think the recent 'My Newgrounds' post was fine because it composited different elements, them being video and flash. I have recently created a composited video and am greatly debating placing it here because whilst it certainly is no video blog, I respect the flash animators who work really hard and I know how long true animation takes.
I'm sure with a community like NG they would still blam 90% of the rubbish that Youtube submits so it may work.

I think you deliver quality work so I think we shouldn't bitch about the videos thing but I do think that a video portal is not good.. Don't let NG turn into another Youtube or whatever..
Also about your compression issue.
You're 8-9 minute video is out of the norm. I was able to post a ~50 second video at the highest quality (the footage was NTSC-DV and it was compressed at high/96kps) at about 4.5 mb. Size really isn't that much issue.
Sorry for the double post, but why not just a video collection instead of a new portal? I would say that is a fair compromise for now and less work for NG coders.
